Asphalt paving, done properly
Dan The Paver is a family-owned asphalt paving contractor in New Jersey. We keep our work focused on asphalt, for three kinds of customers: residential driveways for homeowners, parking lots and commercial properties for businesses, HOAs and property managers, and roads and streets in new neighborhoods for builders and developers. Milling, base work, grading and drainage correction are the tools we use to get those jobs right, so they are listed here as part of the work rather than as separate trades.
Here is an overview of our asphalt paving services in NJ, with a link to the full page for each.
Residential driveway services
Asphalt driveway paving
New driveways and full replacements, built on an excavated, graded and compacted aggregate base with roughly 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt for a typical home. This is our core residential service, and the page explains the full step-by-step process, timing and care. Read more about asphalt driveway paving.
Driveway repaving
When the base is still sound, the worn top can be milled off and fresh asphalt paved over a tack coat, renewing the surface for less than a full replacement. The driveway paving page explains when repaving works and when the base has to be rebuilt instead. See asphalt driveway paving.
Widening and extensions
Extra width, side parking pads, turnarounds and flared entrances, tied into your existing driveway with a saw-cut, tacked and rolled seam. Learn about driveway widening and extensions.
Comparing your options
Not sure whether you need a new driveway, a repave or a drainage fix? Our guide to asphalt driveways in New Jersey compares each option, with notes on base, thickness, edges and timing.
Commercial and community services
Parking lot paving
Paving, repaving and reconstruction for retail, office, industrial and residential properties. We phase the work so the lot stays as usable as possible, and pave commercial lots in two lifts over a thicker base. Read about parking lot paving.
Commercial paving
A wider look at the properties we serve: retail and office properties, warehouses and industrial yards, churches, schools and HOA communities, private access drives, and what heavier traffic demands. See commercial asphalt paving.
Builder and developer services
Subdivision roads and streets
New neighborhood roads, cul-de-sacs and entrance roads paved for builders: base course during construction, top course at the end of the build-out, milling at curbs and tie-ins, and phased paving that follows the development. We work from the approved plans and schedule around your site contractor and engineer. Read about subdivision road paving.
Work that is part of every job
Asphalt milling and recycling
Milling grinds off worn asphalt so the new surface meets garages, doors, curbs and the street at the right height, and the millings are recycled, often as base material. Details on asphalt milling and recycling.
Base repair and drainage correction
Where the ground has gone soft or water collects, we saw-cut the failed section, dig it out, rebuild and compact the base, and correct the pitch before the new asphalt goes down. This is done as part of a driveway or lot repaving job, never as a quick fill. See how it fits into parking lot paving.
What every job includes
No matter the size, the same basics apply:
- A free on-site estimate with a written scope: what comes out, how the base is handled, and how thick the asphalt will be.
- Drainage first. We grade so water leaves the pavement and moves away from buildings.
- A compacted base sized to your soil and your traffic.
- Machine-placed asphalt with a paving machine, compacted with rollers while hot.
- Clean edges and tie-ins at the street, garage, walkways and curbs.
- Cleanup and a final walkthrough before we leave.
Paving season in New Jersey runs roughly from spring into late fall, when temperatures allow hot asphalt to compact properly. Fresh driveways can usually take cars after a few days, and heavy vehicles a bit later.
Which service do I need?
A few quick pointers if you are not sure where to start:
- Your driveway is sinking, rutted or cracked into small pieces: look at asphalt driveway paving. The base has likely failed and a replacement is the lasting fix.
- Your driveway is solid but faded and worn: milling and repaving may be all it needs.
- You need more room: see widening and extensions.
- You have holes, soft spots or standing water: start with our guide to asphalt driveways in New Jersey, which explains when drainage and edge fixes help and when the base needs rebuilding.
- You manage a lot, a building or a community: begin with parking lot paving or commercial paving.
- You are building a new neighborhood: see subdivision road paving for base course, top course and phased road work.
Whatever the starting point, the estimate visit is where we confirm what your pavement actually needs. If a smaller job will solve the problem, we will tell you, and if the problem is bigger than it looks, we will explain why before you commit to anything.
Pricing
Every driveway and lot is priced on site, because size, tear-out, base condition, drainage, thickness and access vary from one property to the next. Our guide on how we price each job explains what drives the number, and the estimate is free.
