Milltown is a small borough in southern Middlesex County, shaped by the Mill Pond, Lawrence Brook and its history as a factory town, including the former Michelin tire plant. Dan The Paver installs and replaces asphalt driveways for Milltown homeowners and repaves asphalt parking lots for its downtown businesses, churches and community buildings.
Homes on tree-lined streets
Milltown is mostly residential, with older homes near the center of town and the Mill Pond, plus later neighborhoods of capes, ranches and colonials on regular lots. Driveways are usually single-car width, running to a detached or attached garage, and many are long and narrow on deep lots. Over time, many families widen them to fit a second car.
Some streets are on gentle slopes leading down toward Lawrence Brook. On those properties, the way water runs across and down the driveway is just as important as the asphalt itself.
Soil and slope
Milltown’s soils are a mix of sandy loam and areas with more silt and clay, typical of the inner coastal plain at the edge of the Raritan valley. Near Lawrence Brook and the Mill Pond, the ground is lower and wetter. On sloped lots, runoff can scour the edges and wash out the base.
On each Milltown job we excavate below the topsoil and any soft or clay-heavy layer, compact the subgrade, add a dense-graded aggregate base and set the grade so water moves off the drive at controlled points. That approach keeps the asphalt supported and stops washouts at the bottom of the slope. Drives with a sound base and a worn top may be good candidates for milling and repaving.
Many Milltown driveways meet the street at a curb with an older apron, and the joint between the two is often where cracking starts. When we replace a drive, we look at that transition closely and rebuild it so the street edge, apron and driveway sit at one smooth, continuous grade.
Downtown and institutional lots
Milltown’s Main Street area has small businesses, offices, churches and civic buildings, each with a modest lot. These lots get daily use and need to stay smooth and well drained. We mill, repair and repave to keep them in shape.

Milltown paving questions
My Milltown home is on a hill and the driveway washes out at the bottom. Can you fix it?
Yes. Parts of Milltown slope down toward Lawrence Brook and the Mill Pond, and water running down a driveway picks up speed and carries base material with it. We regrade so water is directed off the drive at the right points, rebuild the base where it has washed out, and pave so the surface sheds water instead of channeling it.
Do you work on the small lots for Milltown businesses along Main Street?
We do. Small business, church and office lots in Milltown's downtown take steady traffic in a tight space. We mill and repave worn areas, rebuild failed sections of base and keep the slope working toward existing drains, scheduling the work to keep the business open where possible.
