Mantoloking is a small, mostly residential borough on the Barnegat Peninsula in Ocean County, set between Bay Head and the barrier-island section of Brick, with the ocean on one side and Barnegat Bay on the other. Dan The Paver builds asphalt driveways for Mantoloking homes and can repave the few asphalt parking lots that serve clubs, churches and community buildings here.
Large homes, narrow strip of land
Mantoloking has some of the largest shore homes in the area, on lots along Route 35 and the side lanes toward the ocean and the bay. Driveways range from short, straight approaches to wide circular drives and multi-car parking courts. The Mantoloking Bridge carries Route 528 across the bay, so the borough is also a crossing point between the mainland and the beach.
Hurricane Sandy struck this town hard, and much of it was rebuilt to higher elevations. That means many driveways now climb to raised garages or lead to parking beneath the house. Getting that slope right, with a smooth transition at the street and the house, is a big part of a Mantoloking driveway job.
Barrier-island ground
The soil here is beach and dune sand over a shallow water table, with salt everywhere. Sand drains quickly but moves under load, so we compact the subgrade thoroughly, place a dense-graded aggregate base and then pave. On the lowest lots, especially bayside, we check the elevation against the water table and build the base up rather than digging deeper into wet ground.
Drainage is designed into the grade. We pitch the drive so rain and wind-driven water head to the street or to planted areas that can absorb it, not to the foundation or a neighbor’s property. Where an old drive still has a sound base, milling and repaving can refresh it without a full tear-out.
A light commercial footprint
There is very little commercial land in Mantoloking. Lots that serve the yacht club, churches and borough facilities still need the same care: firm base, proper slope and clean edges. We can schedule those jobs outside the busiest summer weeks.
Ask the borough before you pave
Mantoloking regulates impervious coverage and work in its coastal zone. Check with the borough construction or zoning office about aprons, curb cuts and any change in paved area.
We also pave next door in Bay Head and Brick. The full list is on our Ocean County paving page.
Mantoloking paving questions
Our Mantoloking home was rebuilt after Sandy and the driveway was never finished properly. Can you fix the grade?
Yes. Many rebuilt and raised homes in Mantoloking ended up with temporary or rushed driveways. We remove what is there, regrade the approach to match the new house elevation, compact the sand base, add aggregate and pave. The goal is a drive that drains to the street and meets the garage without a hard lip.
Can you work around our dune and landscaping on an oceanfront lot?
We plan the work zone before we arrive. On oceanfront and bayfront lots in Mantoloking we keep equipment on the drive footprint and the street, protect planted areas, and leave dune areas alone. If access is limited we use smaller machines and schedule deliveries so the street is not blocked for long.
