Leonardo is a bayside community in the northeastern part of Middletown Township, on the shore of Sandy Hook Bay between Belford and Atlantic Highlands. It is not a separate municipality, but it has its own ZIP code and a strong neighborhood identity. Dan The Paver installs and repaves asphalt driveways for Leonardo homeowners and handles asphalt parking lot work for the marina, small businesses and multi-family properties in this part of Middletown.
A bay town within Middletown
Leonardo is home to Leonardo State Marina, a busy launch point on the bay, and its shoreline is where the long Naval Weapons Station Earle pier reaches out into Sandy Hook Bay. Route 36 runs along the southern edge of the community, connecting it to Atlantic Highlands and the rest of the bayshore.
Housing here is a mix of older bungalows, capes and modest year-round homes on small to mid-size lots, with streets climbing gently from the water toward Route 36. Driveways are mostly short, single-car runs, though many owners now want them widened for a second car. Our driveway widening and extensions work handles that, and full replacements fall under our asphalt driveway paving service.
Soil and water near Sandy Hook Bay
Close to the bay, Leonardo’s ground is sandy and the water table is high, while the land closer to Route 36 rises and drains better. On the low blocks, we dig out soft material and build a thicker compacted base; on the higher streets, a standard base with careful grading does the job. In both cases the goal is the same: water should leave the driveway quickly and never sit against the house.
Lots along the bayshore
The marina, small shops along Route 36 and apartment properties in the area see a mix of cars, boat trailers and service trucks. That kind of traffic punishes thin pavement. We repave, rebuild failing sections and correct drainage through our parking lot paving service.

Leonardo paving questions
Is Leonardo its own town, and will that affect a driveway permit?
Leonardo is a section of Middletown Township, not a separate municipality, even though it has its own post office and ZIP code. That means driveway aprons, curb cuts and lot coverage questions go to the Middletown Township construction and zoning office rather than a Leonardo office.
Our street in Leonardo is close to the bay. Do driveways there need a different build?
Low bayside streets often have a high water table and softer ground, so we excavate further, build a thicker compacted stone base and grade the finished surface to drain toward the street. On the higher ground farther from the water, a standard base usually works well.
