At the northern tip of the Barnegat Peninsula, Bay Head is a small Ocean County borough of shingled cottages, quiet streets and water on both sides. Dan The Paver builds and replaces asphalt driveways for Bay Head homeowners and handles asphalt parking lots for the handful of shops, clubs and churches that serve the town year round and through the summer.
Shore cottages and short driveways
Bay Head is known for its older shingle-style homes, many on narrow lots east and west of Route 35, plus waterfront houses along Twilight Lake and the Barnegat Bay side. Driveways here tend to be short and tight, sometimes squeezed between a house and a property line with only a car’s width to spare. Some properties have a single parking space and an apron; others have a longer side drive to a detached garage at the back of the lot.
Because the borough is compact, details matter. A new driveway has to meet the street at the right height, avoid steering water toward the house or the neighbor, and look clean next to well-kept landscaping. Many Bay Head owners have also raised their homes in recent years, which changes the grade of the approach and sometimes calls for a parking area underneath.
Building on beach sand
Bay Head sits on barrier-island sand with a high water table and salt in the air and ground. That combination is hard on a driveway that was laid over loose fill with little base. When we replace one here, we excavate the old surface and any soft material, compact the sand beneath, add a dense-graded aggregate base and then place the asphalt.
Grading is the main defense against storm water. We set a gentle pitch toward the street or a planted area so rainfall and spray-driven water do not sit in the drive. On the lowest bayside lots we check the elevation carefully before deciding how thick the base should be. If the existing base is sound and only the top is tired, milling and repaving may be an option.
Small commercial lots
Bay Head’s commercial footprint is small: shops and cafes around the train station area at the end of the North Jersey Coast Line, marine businesses on the bay, a few churches and clubs. Lots like these are short on space and need to drain well. We mill, rebuild failed base and repave in tight quarters and can schedule work around seasonal hours.
Check with the borough first
Bay Head, like other shore boroughs, may limit impervious coverage and regulate aprons and curb cuts. Talk to the Bay Head construction or zoning office before changing the size or location of your driveway.
We also pave in neighboring Point Pleasant Beach and Mantoloking. For the full Ocean County list, see our Ocean County paving page.
Bay Head paving questions
Bay Head lots are tiny. Is there even room for your equipment?
Usually, yes. We size the crew and machines to the property. On the narrow lots between Route 35 and the ocean, we often use smaller rollers, stage materials carefully on the street, and coordinate with neighbors so we are not blocking shared access longer than needed. The job is planned around the lot rather than the other way around.
When is the best time of year to pave a driveway in Bay Head?
Many Bay Head owners prefer late spring or early fall. Asphalt needs warm enough weather to place and compact properly, and the quieter weeks outside the height of summer make it easier to park trucks, close a street briefly and finish without beach traffic. We will work with your schedule, including for homes that are only occupied seasonally.
