Ocean Grove is a seaside community within Neptune Township, in Monmouth County. It is not its own municipality. The town was laid out as a Methodist camp meeting ground, and the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association still owns the land, which homeowners lease. Its Great Auditorium, tent colony and blocks of Victorian homes make it one of the best-known historic districts on the Jersey Shore. Dan The Paver provides asphalt driveway paving and parking lot paving where Ocean Grove properties have room for them.
Small lots, few driveways
Ocean Grove was designed for walking. Lots are narrow, homes sit close together and close to the sidewalk, and many properties have no driveway at all. Where a property does have off-street parking, it is usually a short strip beside the house or a small area behind a guest house, inn or multifamily building.
That makes access the first question. We check whether a truck and roller can reach the area, how close it is to porches and foundations, and where water will go once it hits a new surface.
Sand by the sea
Ocean Grove sits on sandy soil between Wesley Lake to the north, Fletcher Lake to the south and the ocean to the east. Sand drains well but moves if it is not compacted, and the water table rises near the lakes. We excavate and compact an aggregate base and set the grade so runoff drains toward the street, not toward a neighbor.
Before anything is scheduled
Because it is a historic district, contact the Neptune Township construction and zoning office about historic review, permits and coverage limits before planning work.
We also pave in neighboring Asbury Park and across the Monmouth County service area.
Ocean Grove paving questions
Does work on my Ocean Grove property need historic review?
It may. Ocean Grove is a designated historic district within Neptune Township, and exterior changes there can need review beyond a standard permit. Before you replace or add a parking pad or driveway, contact the Neptune Township construction and zoning office and ask what applies to your lot. We schedule work only after you have the approvals you need.
Can you pave a small rear parking area behind a guest house in Ocean Grove?
Often, yes, if the site has access and the township allows it. Ocean Grove lots are tight, so we look at how equipment can reach the area, where water will drain and how close the space is to neighboring buildings. Small asphalt areas still need proper excavation, a compacted base and enough pitch to move water away from foundations.
