Wickatunk is a small, rural-feeling community in the eastern part of Marlboro Township, Monmouth County, near the Colts Neck border. It has its own post office and ZIP code, and Route 79 runs through the area on its way between Freehold and Matawan. Dan The Paver builds asphalt driveways for Wickatunk homes and paves asphalt parking lots for nearby businesses, farms and institutions. Township-wide information lives on our Marlboro paving page.
Farmland roots, larger lots
Wickatunk has more open space than the subdivisions in central Marlboro. Properties include older farmhouses, horse and nursery land, and newer custom homes on larger lots, many set well back from the road. That means longer driveways, often curved, sometimes gravel, with turnarounds and parking pads near detached garages or barns.
Long drives need a plan for how water and traffic move along them. We map the route, fix soft spots, and build each section to carry the load it will see. Full details are on our asphalt driveway paving page, and driveway extensions apply when owners add a spur to a barn or garage.
Soils and slope
The ground here is typical of central Monmouth County: loamy soils with clay in places, small streams and gentle slopes. Clay holds water and weakens when saturated, so we remove it where it sits under the driveway, compact an aggregate base in lifts, and crown or side-pitch the surface to shed water.
Commercial and farm parking
Farms, garden centers, churches and businesses along Route 79 and the surrounding roads need parking that stays firm in wet weather. We provide parking lot paving, including first-time paving of gravel lots and milling and repaving of older ones.
Wickatunk neighbors Colts Neck and Holmdel, where we work as well. For every town we serve, see our Monmouth County paving page.
Wickatunk paving questions
Wickatunk has its own post office. Is it a separate town for driveway permits?
No. Wickatunk is an unincorporated community inside Marlboro Township, even though it has its own ZIP code and post office. Driveway apron, curb cut and impervious coverage questions go to Marlboro's construction and zoning office. If your driveway connects to a county road such as Route 79, ask the township whether county approval is also needed.
Our Wickatunk property has a long gravel drive that washes out in heavy rain. Is asphalt the answer?
Asphalt can solve it, but only with the right base and grade under it. Washouts on long country drives come from water running down the lane. We reshape the route so water sheds off the sides, fix soft sections, compact a solid aggregate base and then pave. Where water must cross the drive, a culvert or swale may be part of the plan.
