Neptune City is a small, densely built borough in Monmouth County, set between Neptune Township and the Shark River with Route 35 running through the middle. Dan The Paver handles asphalt driveway paving for the borough’s homes and parking lot paving for the businesses along its main roads. Here, lots are small, so the details are what make a driveway last.
Small lots, tight work
Neptune City’s housing is mostly older single-family homes, many of them capes, bungalows and two-story houses on narrow lots. Driveways are typically single-car runs alongside the house, sometimes leading to a small detached garage in the back. With homes close together, there is little room for equipment and none for mistakes.
We plan the work around that. Smaller machines, careful saw cuts at the sidewalk and neighboring properties, and protecting fences and foundations are part of every job here. A short driveway still needs the same quality base and compaction as a long one, and arguably more, because every car pulls in and out over the same narrow strip.
Sand, shore air and the water table
Neptune City sits on the coastal plain, so the soil is mostly sandy and drains reasonably well on higher ground. Closer to the Shark River and its tidal edges, groundwater is higher and the soil stays wetter. In those spots, a thin or poorly compacted base fails quickly, and you see ruts and sinking near the street.
When we rebuild a driveway, we excavate below the soft material, install a compacted aggregate base and lay hot asphalt at a depth suited to daily traffic. Slope is critical on flat lots, so we pitch the surface to send water to the street or lawn, not toward the house.
Commercial corridors
Route 35 and Route 33 bring a steady mix of retail, auto service shops, restaurants and offices through and around Neptune City. Their parking lots take heavy turning traffic at the entrances. We mill worn areas, repair base failures, fix ponding and repave so the lot drains properly and stays open as much as possible during the work. For broader commercial jobs, see our commercial paving page.

Neptune City paving questions
Our Neptune City driveway is only wide enough for one car. Can it be widened during replacement?
Often, yes, as long as the lot and local rules allow it. On narrow Neptune City lots we check setbacks, the side yard and the curb cut before planning a wider drive. If the borough approves, we excavate the extra width, build the base to match the existing section and pave it all as one surface so there is no seam down the middle.
Does living close to the Shark River affect how my driveway should be built?
It can. Homes on lower ground nearer the river tend to have a higher water table and damper soil, which weakens a thin base. On those lots we pay extra attention to excavation depth, base thickness and pitch so water drains away quickly. Properties on higher ground closer to Route 33 usually need less.
