Sea Girt is a small, quiet borough at the southern end of the Monmouth County shoreline, tucked between Spring Lake to the north and Manasquan to the south. Homes here range from classic shingle-style cottages to large new houses on generous lots near the beach. How driveways are laid out in Sea Girt
Lots in Sea Girt are wider and deeper than in many shore towns, especially on the streets closest to the ocean. That means more homes have a long driveway running along one side of the house to a detached or rear-facing garage. Some properties have a circular drive across the front. Closer to Route 71 and the train line, lots are smaller and drives are shorter and straighter.
A lot of homes in town have been rebuilt or heavily renovated, and the driveway is usually one of the final pieces. A new house with a cracked, sunken driveway looks unfinished, so we often get calls to tear out an old surface completely and start over with proper asphalt driveway paving.
Sandy soil, ponds and runoff
Sea Girt sits on coastal plain sand. Wreck Pond forms the northern boundary with Spring Lake, and Stockton Lake lies near the southern edge by Manasquan. The sand drains well, but low spots close to these ponds and near the beach can stay wet after storms, and the water table rises in a wet season.
Our approach is simple. Dig out organic topsoil and anything soft, then build a compacted aggregate base thick enough to spread the load. On sand, we roll in lifts so the base does not settle later. The finished asphalt is graded so water moves toward the street, a lawn or a drain rather than the garage. On the long side drives typical in town, we watch the grade carefully so water does not run the whole length and pond at the back.
Commercial and institutional paving
Sea Girt is mostly residential, but there is a short business stretch on Washington Boulevard and a number of churches, clubs and institutional properties in and around the borough, including the large National Guard Training Center grounds. For property owners and managers who need it, we offer parking lot paving with milling, base repair and full repaving handled as part of the job.
Permits and borough rules
Ask the borough’s construction and zoning office about rules for driveway aprons, curb cuts and impervious coverage before you finalize a design, especially if you are widening. Coverage limits often matter on shore lots with new, larger homes.

Last. Heavy equipment, dumpsters and material deliveries will damage fresh asphalt, so most Sea Girt builders hold the driveway until exterior work and final grading are done. We can prepare a temporary base earlier if access is a problem, then come back to finish it. Talk with your builder about the schedule and check with the borough about apron and curb cut requirements before the final pour of the season.
Is a long side driveway to a rear garage common in Sea Girt, and does it cost more to build?
It is very common on the larger lots east of the train tracks, where garages sit at the back of the property. A longer drive means more excavation, base material and asphalt, so the scope is larger than a short front apron.
