Rumson is an affluent borough on a peninsula between the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers, in eastern Monmouth County. Rumson Road, River Road and Ridge Road wind past large homes and estates, and the Oceanic Bridge connects the borough to Middletown. Dan The Paver handles asphalt driveway paving for Rumson homes and parking lot paving for local businesses, houses of worship, clubs and schools.
Long drives, gates and motor courts
Rumson’s properties are some of the largest in the county. Many homes sit far back from the road behind gates, with long, winding driveways, circular drives at the entrance and motor courts in front of multi-car garages. Other streets have older homes on moderate lots with straightforward two-car drives.
These driveways are part of the first impression of the property, and they also carry delivery trucks, landscapers and guests. We plan the layout, edges and grading carefully, and we build the base to handle the heaviest regular vehicle, not just the family car.
River ground and tree cover
Rumson’s soils are mostly sandy, but the peninsula is ringed by water, and lower areas near the rivers have a higher water table. Mature trees line many properties, and their roots often lift older drives. We excavate soft or root-filled soil, install and compact an aggregate base and grade the surface so water moves off and away from homes, gates and garage doors.
If the base under an older drive is still sound and only the surface is worn, milling and repaving may be a good choice.
Downtown and shared lots
Rumson’s small downtown along River Road and East River Road has shops, restaurants and offices, and the borough has houses of worship, schools and clubs with shared parking. These lots need to look good and drain well. We mill worn surfaces, rebuild failed areas and repave with clean edges.
Permits
Before replacing or widening a driveway, ask the Rumson construction and zoning office about aprons, curb cuts and impervious coverage limits.
We also pave in Fair Haven and Sea Bright, plus the rest of the Monmouth County service area.
Rumson paving questions
Our Rumson estate has a long driveway with a circle at the house. Can it be replaced in one job?
Yes, as long as the plan accounts for access while we work. On long Rumson drives we usually build the base along the full length first, then pave in a sequence that keeps a route open as long as possible. Circles and motor courts get extra attention to grading so water drains away from the entrance and the garage.
We live on the river side of Rumson. Does that affect how the driveway should be built?
It can. Homes close to the Navesink or Shrewsbury River often sit on lower ground with a higher water table, especially near the shoreline. We excavate to firm ground, build a compacted aggregate base and set the grade so runoff drains away from the house. On lower lots, careful elevation matters more than extra thickness.
