Freehold is the seat of Monmouth County, and the name covers two places: Freehold Borough, the historic downtown with the county courthouse and Main Street shops, and Freehold Township, the large suburb that wraps around it. Dan The Paver serves both. We install and replace asphalt driveways on borough side streets and township cul-de-sacs, and we pave asphalt parking lots for the plazas, offices and institutions across the area.
Two towns, two kinds of driveway
Walk the borough and you see older homes close together, many of them generations old, with driveways that squeeze between houses toward a garage in the back. Space is tight, and old drives often have layer after layer of asphalt piled on top of each other until they sit higher than the lawn.
The township is a different picture. Developments built over many years off Route 9, Route 33, Route 537 and Route 79 hold ranches, split-levels, colonials and newer large homes. Driveways are wider and often double-width, with some on cul-de-sacs where the apron is curved. Several active-adult communities have their own private roads and parking.
Our asphalt driveway paving service handles both: careful tear-outs on tight borough lots and full replacements or milling and repaving on township homes.
Ground conditions around the county seat
Freehold sits on the inner coastal plain, where sandy loam is the rule but clay and marl layers turn up in places. Some neighborhoods sit near the headwaters of brooks that drain toward the Manasquan and the Millstone, and those areas can hold water.
When we excavate, we look for the soft, wet spots and the pockets of clay. Those come out and are replaced with compacted aggregate. On old borough drives with several stacked layers, we remove the buildup so the new surface sits at the right height relative to the garage floor and walkway. Grading comes next, with a fall that carries water to the street. Asphalt thickness matches the use, and heavier sections go where delivery vehicles turn.
In the township’s older developments, many original drives are reaching the end of their life at once. If yours has wide cracks, a crumbling apron where it meets the street and a low spot by the garage, a full replacement is usually the smarter choice over another quick fix.
Commerce on Route 9 and beyond
Freehold Raceway Mall anchors a stretch of Route 9 and Route 33 that is lined with shopping centers, restaurants, car dealers and offices. The borough has county government buildings, a hospital nearby in the township, churches and many professional offices with small lots.
Busy lots wear unevenly. Entrances crumble, drive lanes rut, and low corners pond. Our parking lot paving work addresses all of it: milling worn surfaces, cutting out base failures, regrading toward the drains and repaving in phases. When the budget is tight, we start with the worst sections and the drainage and finish the rest in a later season.
Permits in the borough and the township
Each municipality has its own construction and zoning office. Before widening a drive, adding a curb cut or increasing paved area, check with the borough or township office that covers your address.
Freehold is part of our Monmouth County service area. We also work regularly in Manalapan and Howell.
Freehold paving questions
Do you work in both Freehold Borough and Freehold Township?
Yes. They are separate municipalities with different housing, and we serve both. The borough has older homes on tight lots, many with narrow side drives and detached garages. The township has larger subdivisions with wider drives and cul-de-sacs. Our crews adjust equipment and approach to each, and the right local office for permit questions depends on which side of the line you live on.
My driveway in the borough runs to a garage behind the house. Is there room for your equipment?
In most cases, yes. Narrow side drives are common in Freehold Borough, and we bring equipment sized for them. Material can be placed in smaller loads, edges are hand-finished along walls and lawns, and the slope is set so water runs to the street instead of toward the foundation or your neighbor.
We manage a shopping plaza near Route 9 in Freehold Township. Can the work happen at night?
Plazas along Route 9 and Route 33 are busy from opening to close, so off-hours or phased work is often the best plan. We discuss store hours, deliveries and tenant needs with you, then mill and pave in sections so customers always have a way in. Night or early-morning scheduling can be arranged when the site calls for it.
