Marlboro Township sits in northwestern Monmouth County, between Holmdel, Manalapan, Colts Neck and the Old Bridge line, and it includes the sections of Morganville, Wickatunk and Robertsville. Most homeowners here live in established subdivisions with larger houses and wide driveways. Dan The Paver installs, replaces and widens asphalt driveways in Marlboro and paves asphalt parking lots for its retail centers, offices, houses of worship and associations.
Marl, clay and the case for a deeper base
The township’s name comes from marl, the greensand clay soil found across this part of Monmouth County. Marl and other clay-rich soils hold moisture, swell when wet and shrink when dry. That movement is tough on a driveway built over a thin base. Big Brook and the other streams that wind through Marlboro also keep some low areas damp.
On Marlboro jobs, we expect to dig. Soft, wet or clay-heavy subgrade comes out until we reach firm ground. A compacted aggregate base follows, built up in layers and rolled. The surface grade is set so water runs off the drive quickly instead of sitting and soaking into the base. Asphalt goes down at a thickness matched to how the drive is used, with extra strength where heavier vehicles park.
The homes behind the drives
Marlboro’s housing is mostly single-family on suburban to large lots: center-hall colonials, contemporary homes and expanded split-levels on curving streets and cul-de-sacs off Route 79, Route 520 and Route 18. Driveways are often two or three cars wide, with side-load garages and parking courts. Wickatunk and parts of the township’s west side are more rural, with farms and homes on bigger parcels with longer drives.
Our asphalt driveway paving service handles full replacements and new driveways. With so many Marlboro households having several drivers, driveway widening is a popular addition, and milling and repaving the old section ties the old and new together.
Signs your Marlboro drive needs more than a top layer
Look for long cracks that follow the tire paths, areas that dip and hold water, edges that have broken off into the lawn and a surface that feels soft on hot days. On clay ground those are usually base problems. A new top layer would hide them for a season at most, so we will tell you plainly when a full replacement is the better buy.
Commercial lots on Route 9 and Route 79
Marlboro’s commercial strip runs mostly along Route 9, with shopping centers, restaurants, banks and medical offices. Route 79 and Route 520 have smaller clusters of businesses, and the township has many houses of worship and schools with large parking areas. Townhouse and condo communities add private roads and lots of their own.
For these properties our parking lot paving work covers milling, base repair, regrading and repaving, often in phases to keep parking available. We pay special attention to drainage around inlets, where clay soils cause the most trouble.
Permit pointer
Before widening a drive, moving a curb cut or adding paved area, check with the Marlboro construction and zoning offices. If you live in an association, you will usually need its approval as well.

Marlboro paving questions
Is it true Marlboro soil is hard on driveways?
It can be. Marlboro takes its name from the marl found in the area, a clay-rich soil that holds water and expands and shrinks with moisture. Where we find it under a driveway, we excavate deeper, replace it with compacted aggregate and make sure the surface drains well. That extra base work is the difference between a drive that stays flat and one that cracks and heaves.
Do you pave in Morganville and Wickatunk too?
Yes. Morganville and Wickatunk are sections within Marlboro Township, and we serve both. Morganville has many suburban subdivisions, while Wickatunk has a more rural feel with farms and larger lots. The base and drainage approach is adjusted to each property.
Can you widen our driveway so three cars fit side by side?
Usually yes. Many Marlboro homes have room on one or both sides of the existing drive. We cut a clean edge along the old asphalt, excavate and build base for the new section, and pave it so the widened area ties in smoothly. If the old drive is worn, it often makes sense to mill and repave the whole thing at the same time so it matches.
