Allenhurst is one of the smallest boroughs on the Monmouth County shore, a quiet square of tree-lined streets tucked between Deal and Loch Arbour with the Atlantic on its eastern edge. Its homes are larger than the lot sizes might suggest, and many have older asphalt driveways that have been filled and covered again and again. Big houses, tight driveways
The residential streets running back from Ocean Avenue are lined with grand Victorian, Colonial Revival and shingle-style homes, many set on generous but narrow lots. Driveways tend to be long, single-width strips running beside the house to a detached garage or carriage house in the back. That layout creates a few common jobs:
- Replacing a cracked, root-lifted drive along its full length while keeping the original footprint.
- Adding a turnaround or second parking space near the rear garage, where coverage rules allow.
- Rebuilding the apron where the drive meets the street, which takes the most traffic and settles first.
Access is part of the plan. Narrow side yards mean we size equipment for the job and protect landscaping, walkways and fences along the route.
Shore soil and drainage
Allenhurst sits on sandy coastal soil only a short walk from the ocean, with Deal Lake bordering the area to the north. Sand drains well, but it also shifts if it is not compacted in thin layers, and the water table is close to the surface on the lower blocks. Our approach is to dig out the old drive and any soft material, set a compacted aggregate base sized for the soil we find, and grade the finished surface so rainwater runs to the street or a planted area rather than toward a foundation. The borough’s small business district along Main Street (Route 71) serves residents and summer visitors, and the beach club and houses of worship in the area have their own parking needs. Allenhurst paving questions
Our Allenhurst home is a large older house close to the ocean. Will salt air shorten the life of a new driveway?
Salt spray is less of a problem for asphalt than what happens underneath it. On blocks near the beach, wind-blown sand and a shallow water table do more damage over time. We focus on a clean, well-compacted base, crisp edges that will not crumble into the lawn, and a pitch that moves water off the drive quickly so the surface is not sitting wet through the winter.
Can you pave a driveway in Allenhurst without disturbing old trees along the property line?
We plan around them. Mature shade trees are part of the borough's character, and their roots are often what lifted the old driveway in the first place. We excavate by hand near major roots where needed, adjust the drive edge slightly if the tree can stay, and talk with you up front about any section where root heave will keep coming back.
