South Amboy is a small city on Raritan Bay, at the northern edge of where we work in Middlesex County. Its waterfront, train station and ferry terminal give it a busy, close-knit feel. Dan The Paver handles asphalt driveways for South Amboy homeowners and paves asphalt parking lots for the shops, offices, churches and apartment buildings in town, with base work suited to bayside ground.
Older blocks and compact lots
Much of South Amboy is an older grid of streets with houses built close together. Many homes have a single narrow drive beside the house, sometimes leading to a detached garage in the back yard. Some have a short parking pad off the street and little else. Newer construction near the waterfront and along the edges of town brought townhouses and homes with attached garages.
Small sites still need a full job. A narrow drive that has broken up usually needs the old asphalt removed, the base repaired and a fresh surface set to drain toward the street. That is the core of our asphalt driveway paving service. If the base is still firm, milling off the worn top and repaving can sometimes be enough.
Building on bayside soil
Being on the bay shapes what is under the ground. Close to the water, soils are often sandy, sometimes mixed with older fill, and the water table sits higher than it does inland. Low streets collect water after storms.
That calls for a careful base. We dig out weak material, avoid going deeper than the groundwater allows, compact the subgrade and install an aggregate base that spreads the load. The finished surface needs real slope so water leaves fast. When rain sits on asphalt and soaks the base below, cracks and holes follow, so getting the pitch right is worth the time.
Business districts and commuter parking
South Amboy has a traditional downtown along Broadway with storefronts, small offices and churches, plus businesses closer to Route 35 and the highway approaches. Parking behind those buildings is usually tight, with a single entrance and little room to stage equipment. Our parking lot paving crews plan around that, milling and repaving small lots efficiently and keeping entrances workable where possible.
Ask the city first
For a new curb cut, a wider apron or more paved area on your lot, start with the South Amboy construction and zoning offices to find out what applies.
South Amboy is covered as part of our Middlesex County service area. We work just as often in neighboring Sayreville and Old Bridge.
South Amboy paving questions
My South Amboy lot is narrow and the driveway runs right along the neighbor's house. How do you pave something that tight?
Tight side drives are common in South Amboy's older blocks. We use smaller equipment where needed, cut clean edges along the property line, and pitch the surface so water drains toward the street instead of toward either foundation. Before starting we confirm where your property ends, and we talk with you about access so neighbors are not blocked longer than necessary.
We are close to the waterfront. Does the higher water table affect the depth of the base?
It does. Near Raritan Bay the ground can be part fill and part wet sand, and digging too deep can bring you into water. We excavate only what the site allows, remove soft or organic material, and build up a compacted aggregate base. On these sites the grade does as much work as the thickness, because water must leave the surface quickly.
