Sayreville sits where the Raritan River and the South River meet, just across the water from the bay towns, and it is a borough with a lot going on in a small footprint. Dan The Paver installs and rebuilds asphalt driveways for Sayreville homeowners and paves asphalt parking lots for the businesses, churches and multifamily properties here. Both jobs start with a base that can handle the local ground.
Clay country and why we dig
Sayreville built an industry on its clay. The same deposits that made the borough known for clay mining still sit under many yards, mixed with the sand of the coastal plain. Where clay is close to the surface, rainwater gets trapped, the ground softens, and in winter it can heave. That is the kind of soil that makes a driveway sag in the tire tracks.
When we price a Sayreville driveway, we look at how the old one failed. Wide cracking and soft spots often mean the subgrade needs to come out. We excavate to solid material, lay and compact an aggregate base, and set the slope so runoff heads to the street and away from the house. On properties near the rivers, where the water table runs higher, we pay extra attention to that pitch.
Sections of the borough
Parlin, Morgan and Melrose each have their own feel. Many streets have older capes and two-story homes on narrow lots with single drives along the side of the house. Newer developments added colonials and townhouses with attached garages and wider aprons. Some homes have a shared drive or a detached garage at the back of the lot, which means a longer, narrower run to pave.
For any of these, our asphalt driveway paving can be a full replacement or, if the base is still in good shape, a mill-and-repave. If you want room for another car, see our driveway widening and extensions work.
Highways, plazas and parking
Route 9, Route 35 and the Garden State Parkway all run through Sayreville, and the commercial corridors along them hold plazas, restaurants, auto businesses and offices. Those lots carry heavy turning traffic and deliveries. Through our parking lot paving service we mill and repave worn surfaces, rebuild failed areas and correct drainage for commercial owners, condo associations and houses of worship.
Check before you widen
If your project changes the apron, the curb cut or the amount of paved surface on your lot, call the Sayreville construction and zoning offices first so you know what is required.
Sayreville is part of our Middlesex County service area. We also work in neighboring South Amboy and South River.
Sayreville paving questions
I have heard Sayreville has a lot of clay in the ground. Is that a problem for a new driveway?
Clay is part of Sayreville's history, and pockets of it still show up when we dig. Clay holds water and swells, which can push asphalt up and crack it. When we find it under a driveway in Parlin, Morgan or Melrose, we dig it out to firm ground, replace it with compacted aggregate and grade the surface so water drains off rather than soaking down.
Can you pave the lot behind our business off Route 9 or Route 35 without closing for days?
Usually yes. Smaller commercial lots along Route 9 and Route 35 can often be milled and repaved in one or two working days. We plan the order so the entrance stays usable as long as possible, and on tighter sites we split the job so part of the lot is always open.
