South River is a compact borough in Middlesex County, named for the river that bends along its eastern edge before joining the Raritan. Its neighborhoods are full of older homes, churches and small businesses, and Dan The Paver works here on asphalt driveways and asphalt parking lots for homeowners, congregations and local business owners. We plan each job around tight lots and riverside ground.
Old streets and narrow drives
South River grew as a working town, and its housing shows it. Many blocks have two-story homes and capes set close together, with a narrow driveway along one side leading back to a detached garage. Shared drives between neighboring homes are not unusual. Newer houses and townhouses on the outskirts of the borough have attached garages and wider fronts.
Tight sites call for careful work: clean edges along walkways and lawns, proper slope so water does not run toward either house, and enough thickness to handle cars turning at the back. Our asphalt driveway paving service handles full replacements, and when the existing base is still sound, milling and repaving can refresh it at lower cost.
Living with the river
The South River has shaped this town for a long time, and its low banks flood in heavy storms. Ground near the river is often damp, with a higher water table and softer soil, while higher streets away from the water have sandier, firmer ground.
That difference matters when we dig. Near the river, we remove saturated or organic material, install and roll a compacted aggregate base, and grade the surface so water clears fast. On higher ground, compaction and edge support are the main concerns. In both cases, asphalt thickness is matched to what the drive carries.
Main Street and community lots
The borough’s commercial life centers on Main Street and the roads leading into town, with storefronts, restaurants, professional offices and several historic churches with their own parking. These lots are usually small and hemmed in by buildings. Through our parking lot paving service we mill out worn asphalt, fix sunken areas around drains and repave with minimal disruption, scheduling around services and business hours.
A note on permits
South River’s construction and zoning offices can tell you what is required before you change a curb cut, widen an apron or add paved area. Give them a call before work is scheduled.
South River is within our Middlesex County service area, and we also work in neighboring East Brunswick and Sayreville.
South River paving questions
Our street near the river floods in big storms. Is it worth paving the driveway?
Yes, as long as it is built for those conditions. In the low parts of South River near the riverbank, we make sure the base is fully compacted aggregate rather than soft soil, and we shape the grade so floodwater drains off as soon as it recedes. Asphalt handles occasional water well when the base under it stays firm, so the base is where we put the effort.
My driveway is shared with the house next door. Can you pave both halves together?
We can, and it usually gives the best result because the surface is one continuous piece with no seam down the middle. Both owners should agree on the scope beforehand. We can walk the drive with both of you, explain the work, and give each household the same information so the decision is easy to make.
